Before we address everything the Academy got wrong, let’s celebrate Angela Basset, Brian Tyree Henry, Rihanna, Tems, Ryan Coogler, and Ruth Carter for their nominations!
Angela Basset is nominated for Best Actress in a supporting role for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Brian Tyree Henry is nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for “Causeway.”
Rihanna, Tems, and Ryan Coogler are nominated for Original Song “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Ruth Carter is nominated for Costume Design for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
And now, to give my little Red Talk flowers to those who weren’t nominated:
Potential Reach of Oscar Snubs: ~33 BILLION
1. The Cast of The Woman King (Potential Reach: 17B)
34% Negative Sentiment. Despite earning BAFTA and SAG nominations for her role in The Woman King, Viola Davis was completely snubbed by the Academy and the entire cast of The Woman King.
2. Black Directors (Potential Reach: 36M)
90% Negative Sentiment. The academy failed to recognize Ryan Coogler for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Gina Prince-Bythewood for “The Woman King,” and Alice Diop in Best International for “Saint Omer.”
3. Danielle Deadwyler in Till (Potential Reach: 9B)
30% Negative Sentiment. Danielle Deadwyler gave a heart-wrenching performance in “Till” that the Academy completely overlooked.
4. Nothing for “Nope” (Potential Reach: 7B)
44% Negative Sentiment. Critically acclaimed box office hit “Nope” from Jordan Peele, starring Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya, was notably missing from the nominations list.
Let me know who I may have missed! The full list of Oscar nominations can be found here.
