I’m getting a little ambitious here! If you’ve worked in social media for a major studio during awards season, you understand. Same-day coverage of an awards show, and attempts to deliver post-mortem reports about your studio’s impact beyond the “total awards won” metric is pure chaos! But it’s undeniable how BLACK last night’s award show was, so here I am! Let’s talk about THE 80TH GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS.
Online conversation about the Golden Globes has driven a potential reach of 16 Trillion across 1M mentions and counting. But that’s not why I’m here. Of that conversation, 207K mentions celebrated the Black nominees and award show winners, with a potential reach of 976B, and 70% of online sentiment was positive (27% was neutral reporting). Let’s dive into some of my favorite moments that helped drive this.
6 Black Moments at the Golden Globes from Social Media:
1. Jerrod Carmichael as the First Black Host (Potential Reach: 298B)
First, let’s chat about that opening monologue calling out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association! “I’ll tell you why I’m here: I’m here cuz I’m Black!”
He also made this excellently timed Scientology joke with Tom Cruise’s returned Golden Globes *right* before introducing Jay Ellis and Glen Powell from Top Maverick. A little background here.
2. All things Abbot Elementary (Potential Reach: 149B)
The one and only Niecy Nash presented Quinta Brunson with her first Best TV Actress win.
Eddie Murphy gave Tyler James Williams a standing ovation for winning best supporting actor in a television series, musical-comedy, or drama.
Sheryl Lee Ralph aimed to inspire up and down the red carpet:
Sheryl Lee Ralph sends message to her 15-year-old self on the #GoldenGlobes carpet. “There’s nothing wrong with your nose, skin, hair or lips because there will be some people called Kardashians and they will pay $10,000 for your lips.”Tiktok failed to load.

5. Zendaya wins! (Potential Reach: 121B)
