Lights!Camera!Data! 3 Graphs to Prep You for Oscars 2023

I wanted to add some quant and color around this weekend’s highly anticipated 95th Academy Awards. The Oscars continue to be so white. The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative did a great report examining the Academy’s history of inclusion and diversity (or lack thereof). If you want something more robust, you can check that out here. I’ve created three graphs about Black nominees and winners using this report and some social data. Here’s what I uncovered:
You can't deny the impact of Black culture even without the awards, nominations, and roles we deserve. Black talent over-performs: just 1% of nominees have been Black but Black winners account for 2% of all Oscars awarded, and 8% of the Oscars’ potential reach on the Internet this week is driven by Black nominees! Imagine our impact with more opportunities.
Top categories for Black Oscar winners include Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Original Song. This year there is an opportunity this year for Angela Basset to win Best Supporting Actress, Brian Tyree Henry to win Best Supporting Actor, and Rihanna & Tems to win Best Original Song. The legendary Ruth Carter is nominated again for Best Costume Design after being the first Black woman to win in 2019, and first-time nominee hair styling icon Camille Friend to win for Best Hair & Make Up for their work in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
In anticipation of the results, I wanted to get a vibe for how social media was feeling about the Black nominees tonight compared to each other and the general Oscar conversation. Yall’s friend Chris Rock and his continued tantrum made this very hard! Conversation surrounding his distasteful Rihanna jokes that have resurfaced was particularly negative…so I went ahead and removed negative sentiment from this data viz. Looks like the internet is most positive about Brian Tyree Henry’s nomination for his performance in Causeway!
